These are the summaries of the sessions. 1. SESSION 1: EMISSIONSANDTHEIRCON1ROL Emission trends and projections for S02 and NOx were fully discussed. A recent decrease in S02 emission in China was reported in ''Trends in Emissions of Acidifying Species in East Asia, 1985-1997", although there have been different estimates, including one that emission would increase until around 2010. The current emission inventories for NH3, NMVOC (non-methane volatile organic compounds), CO and Particulate Matter were discussed.
Since then, the global-scale anthropogenic acidification of the biosphere has been progressing. The rate of dischatge is still accelerating. Approximately 70-95 Tg of sulphur and well over 30 Tg of nitrogen are currently emitted globally each year from fossil fuel combustion and more recently also from the application of nitrogen fertilizers. Natural ecosystems as well as human society have suffered much from the pollution, which has resulted in considerable physical damage and economic losses in health, social, and cultural aspects.
