Commodify Your Dissent: Salvos from The Baffler

From the pages of The Baffler, the main very important and perceptive new journal of the nineties, sharp, satirical broadsides opposed to the tradition Trust.
In the "old" Gilded Age, the barons of industrial amassed great wealth and impact from their railroads, metal generators, and banks. yet at the present time it truly is tradition that stands on the middle of the yank firm, mass leisure the industrial dynamo that brings the general public into the eating fold and consolidates the ability of commercial over the yankee brain. For a decade The Baffler has been the invigorating voice of dissent opposed to those advancements, within the grand culture of the muckrakers and the yank Mercury. This assortment gathers the easiest of its writing to discover such ordinary advancements because the start of the insurgent hero as shopper within the pages of stressed out and info; the ever-accelerating race to marketplace early life tradition; the increase of latest enterprise experts like Tom Peters and the trend for Hobbesian company "reengineering"; and the encroachment of advertisements and business into each final corner and cranny of yank existence. With its releasing angle and cant-free intelligence, this publication is a robust polemic opposed to the designs of the tradition company on us all.

Whiteout: The CIA, Drugs, and the Press

A surprising divulge of the CIA's function as drug baron. On March 18, 1998, the CIA's Inspector basic, Fred Hitz, advised astounded US Reps that the CIA had maintained relationships with businesses and contributors that the enterprise knew to be serious about the drug enterprise. extra stunning used to be the revelation that the CIA had bought from Reagan's Justice division clearance to not file any wisdom it will possibly have of drug-dealing by way of CIA resources.

Astrophys. : Astron. Astrophys. 537, A5 (2012) Part II Techniques for Observing Cosmic Magnetic Fields Chapter 3 Synchrotron Radiation and Faraday Rotation George Heald Abstract Synchrotron radiation and its degree of linear polarization are powerful tracers of magnetic fields that are illuminated by cosmic ray electrons. Faraday rotation of the linearly polarized radiation is induced by intervening line-ofsight magnetic fields that are embedded in ionized plasmas. For decades these observational tools have been workhorses for utilizing radio telescopes to study magnetic fields inside and outside the Milky Way.

The contours indicate the 330 GHz continuum emission in steps of 6 , from 6 to 96 , where D 20 mJy beam 1 . The greyscale is the polarized emission (up to 38:3 mJy beam 1 and the line segments indicate the derived magnetic field direction. The panel on the right is a synthetic dust polarization map generated with the ARTIST module DustPol (Padovani et al. 2012; Sect. 4) produced with the same contour and intensity levels observations in Frau et al. (2011). The resulting map, made from 8 h SMA tracks in the sub-compact, compact and extended configuration is shown in Fig.

Powerful optical and infrared techniques have been developed for studying magnetic fields, but these are mostly applicable in the very nearby Universe, typically within the Milky Way (see contributions in this volume by Jones and Anderson). Zeeman splitting is a very important radio tracer of magnetic field strengths (see Troland, this volume) but is also used primarily within the Milky Way. For the study of cosmic magnetism, it is the illumination of magnetic fields by relativistic positrons and electrons (henceforth referred to collectively as electrons) that provides the most powerful and far-reaching information.
